Can Women Make it to the Top (and be Happy)?
A NYT article discussing problems with the retention of female lawyers was pointed in my direction this weekend. Interestingly enough, both the law school that I was accepted to and the firm that I work for are mentioned throughout the article. There are several quotes that stand out, including:
"Law firms like to talk about running the firm like a business and looking at the numbers, but they're running on an institutional model that's about 200 years old," she says. "Most law firms do a horrible job of managing their personnel, in terms of training them and communicating with them."
"I see a lot of people who are distressed about where the profession has gone," Ms. Rikleen says. "They don't like being part of a billable-hour production unit. They want more meaning out of their lives than that."
"I think some women choose to commit to their families or their careers because they see it as an either/or decision, but I don't think it has to be an either/or decision."
These have definitely raised questions as to what I am really looking to get out of law school. Do I desire to join the corporate law world that I work in now to work my butt off and possibly have the chance of being a partner. Does becoming a partner really matter to me? Intense questions.
But onto lighter topics. I saw FOUR movies this weekend. Transamerica, 40 Year Old Virgin, V for Vendetta, and Madagascar. Not to mention we finished watching Arrested Development: Season Two. Also, since I've been having issues with my right arm and shoulder I decided to give Asia Tui-Na Massage Clinic a chance and Wow! did that little woman pack some power. I was in pain all day on Sunday and I'm not even sure it fixed my problem, but I certainly think she put a lot of things back in their place.

Haven't seen V yet, but I am a huge Transamerica fan.
I hadn't seen much of the hype leading up to it, and thought she was being played by a man until the end credits. Guess the penis should have tipped me off.
