According to Black Book Mag both Robert Pattinson and James Franco are in the running to play Jeff Buckley. Admittedly, I have not seen Twilight, I just cannot imagine Robert Pattinson filling Jeff Buckley's shoes as well as James Franco could. I mean, don't Milk, Pineapple Express, and Spider Man 3 demonstrate the incredible range that Mr. Franco can pull off?

Benicio Del Toro as Bret Easton Ellis? I am not so sure about this. I'm not so sure about another Bret Easton Ellis movie adaptation. Admittedly, I enjoyed American Psycho, in both movie and book form, and even, The Rules of Attraction, I just don't know if we need another one. Is anyone actually going to go see this? Perhaps Del Toro will bring out the Easton Ellis fan base, but I'll wait for the DVD, if and when this actually gets made...

Smiling as a Predictor of a Successful Marriage? Although we all know by now that correlation/=causation, and I found this suggestion, "people who smile when a photographer tells them to are more likely to have obedient personalities, which could make marriage easier," pretty amusing, this is still an interesting piece to think about.

The comments give it a bashing, and everyone should look at it with a healthy sense of skepticism, but...is marital destiny really found in subtle clues we unconsciously make everyday? Can our high school yearbook photos predict whether or not we will get divorced? I should dig mine up next time I'm home.

It's that time of year again...law school exams. So what am I doing? Thinking of what I would want my super power to do be if I had one.

Here's what I came up with: I would want to be able to look at any recipe and have that food automatically made for me. No matter how complex, time intense, whatever rare ingredients are involved, I could close my eyes and it would appear in front of me, piping hot and presented beautifully.

Bonus power: All the dishes would be washed post-eating.

Went to Napa Valley, California yesterday for some wine tasting. Look at those beautiful wine grapes on the vineyards. Brought home a few bottles for myself, friends, and family. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the day was calm and relaxing. Even got to dine at the Culinary Institute of America again. Summer days are coming to the end, but I'm enjoying every last one of them.

Food on the table
Went to a craw fish boil yesterday in Tiburon. It was a gorgeous, sunny, warm day out there. There are more pictures back on my Flickr page. Check these little beasts out.

To tell you the truth though, it was a bit of work for not much pay off. You only really eat the tail meat and as you can see, they aren't that big. Oh well, it was fun to spend the day with law school friends and others just enjoying the food, sunshine, and company. Oh, and did I mention the hula hooping? So fun.

You know when you feel like you're entering into a new stage of your life, you want to do something to commemorate that? Well, my life is in a constant state of flux, but I feel the cogs churning, therefore, I have dyed my hair red. I also have decided to take my health more seriously, hence in the last month I have laced up some new running shoes and run at least three miles three times a week, which will hopefully allow me to run in a 5k by next month. Most importantly, I have decided that I should spend more time doing things I love, which includes cartwheeling, smiling, and sometimes letting my feet lift off the ground.

PS-Don't I look like a pro cartwheeler? I am pretty proud of those pointed toes.

In my back yard there is a lemon tree with tons of tiny little lemons. This one's not even the size of a golf ball. Life's given me lemons...good thing I'm a fan.

Ah, it's been a long while since I last posted and I would castigate myself if I hadn't been driving myself crazy studying for 1L exams. Hopefully all that work will pay off. I am actually supposed to be working on an essay as we speak for law journal competition, but I thought this was more important for now. If you have not, check out this link to justin.tv. Basically the guy wears a camera around all the time. It's called "Lifecasting". He's being evicted from his apartment, as apparently documented by this website.

This SF Chronicle article covers a lot of the legal issues involved in the case. First of all it brings up landlord tenant issues, as well as possible zoning violations. The landlord's "acrimonious" tenant relations have caused a stir because prospective tenants have been apparently denied housing in Justin's building because of their affiliations with him.

I watched a little of the live feed. At that time he was walking around with his family in North Beach trying to go to House of Nanking, which I think ended being too crowded, which it always is, because they are meandering around now. It's not terribly exciting, but the guy really seems to be ignoring the fact that he's wearing a camera on his head and his family and friends seem to be at ease too. Nothing about this screams "hoodlum causing a ruckus in his apartment"...

PS- Since the story appeared on Digg it might be hard to access the sites, but worthwhile to check it out, whether just curious in this guy's life or the legal ramifications.

Grindhouse

Grindhouse. This morning was perfect weather for movie watching, or so I thought. Unfortunately, there were only about 20 other people who braved the cool misty fog to see Planet Terror and Death Proof. I had expected for it to be sold out because there's been so much hype surrounding the films.

I won't give anything away, but I fancied Planet Terror, the Rodriguez film over Tarantino's Death Proof. Tarantino appears in both movies, though I'm not exactly sure that was necessary. Kurt Russel is the best thing about Death Proof by far; his dramatization made the whole theater snicker. I am not a Rosario Dawson fan. Rose McGowan, who is featured in both films, is really amazing. All in all, it was gritty, yet light, violent, but not disgustingly so, and a real tribute to grindhouse exploitation films of yesteryear. The mock trailers were really well done too. I enjoyed them all.

Recommended for sure.

PS- Planet Terror includes a cover of Dead Kennedy's "Too Drunk to Fuck", and Death Proof features T.Rex's "Jeepster". The soundtrack in Death Proof was admittedly very fitting and catchy.

I don't think anything on the list is so scandalous, but I don't necessarily buy into men being smarter just because a study says that they score higher on intelligence tests and the link provided didn't really wow me.

The link explaining the differences in processing through gray or white matter was really interesting though.

In human brains, gray matter represents information processing centers, whereas white matter works to network these processing centers.

The results from this study may help explain why men and women excel at different types of tasks, said co-author and neuropsychologist Rex Jung of the University of New Mexico. For example, men tend to do better with tasks requiring more localized processing, such as mathematics, Jung said, while women are better at integrating and assimilating information from distributed gray-matter regions of the brain, which aids language skills.

Scientists find it very interesting that while men and women use two very different activity centers and neurological pathways, men and women perform equally well on broad measures of cognitive ability, such as intelligence tests.

MSNBC article discussing the divergent viewpoints between men and women concerning the balance between working hours and other hours. As I volunteer with the Work/Life Law center for my school, I am obviously in the camp of cutting back hours for proportional pay.

The “health diagnosing” occupation, which Golden said includes physicians and physician assistants, had the highest overemployment rate of 20 percent, compared to 14 percent of lawyers and judges who reported being overemployed.

Just something to think about as I head into the legal profession as a woman. Whether or not because of household or child care responsibilities, I still have a feeling that having a life outside of law is an important factor in my future work decisions.

Hear No Evil, Smell No Evil?

Because recently I heard a story and saw some gruesome photographs of a guy who got his ear almost completely torn off by a dog bite, I was drawn to this Slate article discussing the ability to hear or smell if your ears or nose is cut off. The situation, granted, was a little different...

On Saturday, Taliban guerrillas punished a group of Afghan truck drivers suspected of collaborating with U.S-led troops by chopping off their ears and noses.

but all in all, the same result. The consensus is that you are probably able to hear and smell, but it's just more difficult and probably not as well as before.

The most interesting part of the article, in my opinion, are the reconstructive surgeries available to fashion new ears and noses. Neither of them sound particularly pleasant, but I'm sure the results are amazing. In fact, if you're curious to see a prosthetic eye, ear, and nose, check them out here.

My thoughts are with you BP, hopefully your surgeries won't require any prosthetics or reconstruction.

Don't Do This to Your Kids

This is even too much for me, the biggest advocate of liberal and honest sex education. And probation sounds pretty lenient considering the child is probably scarred for life.

During an investigation by the state child welfare authorities, Prata, 33, said he and Arnold, 36, had sex "all the time" in front of the child and that "we don't believe in hiding anything." He told an investigator that they did not force the girl to watch.

Having sex in front of your children to teach them about sex is horrid, especially a nine year old. Come on now, having open and honest conversations with your children about sexuality and risk and harm reduction is something I believe and support, but to have intercourse in front of them has got to be so traumatizing. I know children are growing up faster and faster, but I do not think a nine year old needs live action sex shows, especially of their parents.

Maybe I'm the last person to find this out, but the Sci Fi channel is going to begin filming a miniseries based on The Wizard of Oz. I am really excited about it; read the article to find out more about the futuristic storyline. Best part about it, Zooey Deschanel is starring as "DG" the re-imagined Dorothy and Alan Cumming is starring as "Glitch" the re-imagined Scarecrow. I must say I don't know all the procedures for preparing myself in the case of a big earthquake and I like the techniques this campaign is using, but it reminds me a little bit of those "Truth" ads about smoking, which I don't think do all that much.

Beautiful=Smarter?

Slate Article discussing whether beauty makes people smarter. Choice quotes with little actual scientific data; just how Slate likes their articles. But it does lead to a valid question of how and why this correlation comes about. Moreover, it's unclear whether beauty corresponds to smarter, or just more preferable, which we're charmed by and unable to see through. Uh oh future lawyers of America, not even our scholarly pursuits are free from this preference.

It is not just politicians whom we prefer to be beautiful. A number of studies, many involving American economist Daniel Hamermesh, have found that "ugly" people earn less in many walks of life, from advertising to law. The beauty premium seems to apply even in professions where there is no reason to expect that beauty counts.

Safer Sex Made Easier...

Condom applicator deemed Most Beautiful at design conference, but obviously the benefits of this device are far more important than beauty. Basically, this is a condom applicator developed in South Africa to make wearing a condom as easy as possible by pre-packaging a plastic applicator in each wrapper that allows it to be put on in one fluid motion. Head on over to the Pronto Condoms website for a demonstration about how it works. Currently only available in South Africa, but I'll be keeping my eye on this. Frankly I'm surprised that this hasn't been done before, but it's a great idea and will hopefully be successful in reducing the risk of being exposed to sexually transmitted infections or HIV.

MSNBC Article discussing the rise of Narcissicism and its negative effects on relationships in society.

“Unfortunately, narcissism can also have very negative consequences for society, including the breakdown of close relationships with others,” he said.

The study asserts that narcissists “are more likely to have romantic relationships that are short-lived, at risk for infidelity, lack emotional warmth, and to exhibit game-playing, dishonesty, and over-controlling and violent behaviors.”

This is my generation, and even as I'm typing this, I realize that I'm internalizing all these feelings, as if I've been attacked. I don't think that telling our youth and children that they are special is creating little monsters with no concept of empathy. Of course we run the risk, but when parents nurture their children, their abilities, and instill moral concepts from an early age, I think this dampens the danger. Or maybe that's just a function of growing up in this generation. I'm pretty sure we'd be much worse off if we started demeaning our children and telling them they're just a dime a dozen.

Zach Braff=Elliott Smith???

Unlike 'The Music Slut', who actually seems to be routing for Zach Braff to play Elliott Smith in a biopic, I think this is a disaster. I like Zach well and good; he's got talent, ability, and he's easy on the eyes, but playing Elliot Smith? I don't think so. Please let this not happen. And while we're at it, let me just say I hate the idea of Kirsten Dunst as Debbie Harry too, which I recently read was happening. To add to that, Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine, Science of Sleep) is possibly taking on this project. Why would he do this after two great movies? I cannot understand Kirsten Dunst's appeal at all.

SF Gate article on Prop 83, which is a voter passed law saying that sex criminals may not live within 2,000 feet of a school or park. Basically it's talking about how the ruling doesn't apply retroactively. We had a huge argument about this in Criminal Law last semester. Of course we want to keep our children and families safe, but these sex offenders have served their time for their crimes. Constitutionally, this seems like the right thing to do and I agree with it. My shock came with the knowledge that there are apparently 90,000 California registered sex offenders.

I am stoked my favorite Hawaii based television show has resumed its third season. I enjoyed last night's episode and the Juliet focused flashbacks. She is definitely one of my favorite new characters and I think the episode was a great way to get back into the story. SF Gate article about Mayor Gavin Newsom's "drinking problem". Interesting that the story of his affair with his campaign manager's wife came out just about a week ago and now all of a sudden he's getting help for his alcohol addiction. Maybe he does have a problem and that is certainly unfortunate, but doesn't this smell like the Mark Foley scandal from 2006? Why I'll never pursue a career in politics...

Hawaii: Duel Perspectives

This blog post was recently brought to my attention. "What's the deal with Hawaii?" it says and really not much more than that. Besides noticing that Hawaii is most often known for tourism, pineapples, and pidgin English, rather than being an economic powerhouse, what's the deal with that blog? Is it suggesting that Hawaii should be something different since it's not living up to its economic potential? That nothing important, intellectual, or educated stems from the unique perspective that Hawaii provides? The only comment worth reading that I think maybe even starts to address a real issue of why Hawaii might not be an economic powerhouse is this:

With regard to Hawaii's relatively poor economic performance, could the psychological effects of isolation factor be a major cause? A close friend of mine just moved back to the mainland after 6 years in Honolulu. She and her husband loved the climate and relaxed pace of life (the latter being a product of the non-ambitious economy, right?), but they got sick of traveling hours and hours by air to visit family members, sick of being so geographically confined on one island, sick of the general lack of standard US amenities (apparently, there's no Target, which is frankly astonishing), and basically just sick of the feeling of being cut off from the mainstream of American life.

That "cut off" feeling can be seductive and appealing if you're not ambitious (or have already enjoyed a successful career and are ready to retire), but in the long run it will turn off those who seek high achievement.

When you combine the isolation with a climate that encourages recreation - who wants to stay inside and slog over the books when you can be playing outside in gorgeous weather EVERY DAY? - it's not surprising that Hawaii is not a hotbed of entrepreneurialism. And that means, in the modern economy, that it will not be likely to enjoy significant material success.

This quote (with the disclaimer that the anonymous author has never lived in Hawaii) may be the only thing on there that captures something without a racist, classist, or completely asinine motivation.

Compare that with this article also speaking of the economics of Hawaii. This admittedly concentrating on the social injustice of my highschool's annual Carnival. Here's a prize-winning quote

Rich people only get rich one way: exploiting other people Â the people who have no choice but to send their kids to Washington Intermediate, or the people who take out student loans to go to college, or the people who work 12-hour swing shifts at Cheesecake Factory.

When you consider going to that carnival again this year, consider this: the fun you get out of the Punahou Carnival is just a side effect of them making money. This carnival, no matter what the local establishment and the local news media want you to believe, is not put on just for your enjoyment. Like every other construct of the ruling class, the Punahou Carnival is there to take your money and keep you locked into servitude and insolvency.

I don't want to pick on this author too much, considering the 100+ comments he's already collected, most of which are cruel (though accurate), but please, my goodness, it's a carnival, it's fun and games, it supplies money for scholarships so students can afford to go to Punahou; it's also staffed by the students and parents of Punahou. Punahou Carnival is an amazing event that brings families, friends, and strangers together. I have fond memories of working the booths, eating the food, and participating in variety show. Don't make me feel like a cog in a vicious scheme to victimize those who are less fortunate when that couldn't be further from the truth.

EDIT: I strongly suggest reading the comments to The Ka Leo article, we've (and I say we've, because it does feel like an attack on the Punahou community) gotten support from Iolani and a whole host of others who respectfully, and not so respectfully, disagree with everything said in the "article".

Personal Review of the Sarah Silverman Program

I missed the first five minutes, but I thought the rest was brilliant. Ms. Silverman has the amazing ability of pulling off that repulsive innocence. I could so without the scat humor, but Doug the dog and the "moral" lessons are just hilarious. I see great things for the future of this program. The series debut of The Sarah Silverman Program is tonight. This promises to be notorious, especially with the tag line "Bound to make you feel better about your own life". You might be wondering, How will I know if I'm going to enjoy this fine comedy programming? Well,this SF Gate article will give you a quite lengthy review of the show, but here's a good start to see if this is going to be on your must see tv list.

So here's a good test of whether you're going to immediately add "The Sarah Silverman Program" to your TiVo or instead seek an injunction from the FCC: Silverman is discussing -- with her dog, Doug -- the relative, uh, thickness and plentitude, of her younger sister's pubic hair and says this: "Her vagina looked like Cat Stevens' face."

I think it certainly deserves a shot.

Slate article detailing why Thoroughbred Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro can still father a horse child, but it could never be called a Thoroughbred like dad. Apparently even though it would be possible for Barbaro to sire a foal after being euthanized

The only way a thoroughbred is allowed to reproduce is by "live cover"; i.e., horse-to-horse sexual intercourse.

Who knew you could have a horse's virility insured? Bizarre stuff going on in the world today. Who'd have thunk all these post mortem insemination issues would spring up at the same time.

Soldier's Family to Inseminate Woman for Grandchildren

This FoxNews article telling the story of an Israeli family who has had their son's sperm removed and saved since 2002, has been given the go ahead to use the sperm in order to have grandkids. To me, this is really twisted and bizarre, especially since the soldier wasn't even married at the time of his death. I understand the desire to have grandchildren, but I think this is a little overboard. The Israel court has allowed it, but I'm not sure it would've played out the same way in the United States. Favorite quote from the article:

Cohen said that she was guided in her decision by her dead son. “An hour after being told he had been killed I took his picture and started talking to him. I asked him, ‘Where are all the children you wanted?’ then looked at the picture and heard him saying, ‘Mum, it’s not too late. There is something you can take from me’.

This NYT article, entitled "Good Girls Go Bad, for a Day" brings up a topic I think about every year around this time. I remember in high school, a girl friend and I dressed up as Winnie the Pooh and Tigger. It was amazing, we had the full on furry costumes, head to toe, and they were awesome. A guy came up to me that day and said "Alicia, what are you doing, Halloween is an excuse for girls to wear as little as possible." That struck me as bizarre. I don't mind women dressing skimpy if they want to, but I think it's kind of sad to use Halloween as this excuse to parade around in pasties, hot pants, and five inch heels.

I went to a Barrister's Ball last night so I was dressed up more than I usually would. Even in a black gown you can feel the eyes follow you. I guess on Halloween there are more people out and about doing it so people assume there's safety in numbers, but don't expect to see Alicia as "Jail Bait" this Halloween. I wonder if I still have that Tigger costume...

Marriage is Minority

NYT article about the trend of marriage. According to the last census married households in 2005 only account for 49.7% of all households. Ok, yes that means it's a huge minority, but a minority nonetheless. I found this particular paragraph interesting.

"It's partially fueled by women in the work force; they don't necessarily have to marry to be economically secure," said Andrew A. Beveridge, a demographer at Queens College of the City University of New York, who conducted the census analysis for The New York Times. "You used to get married to have sex. Now one of the major reasons to get married is to have children, and the attractiveness of having children has declined for many people because of the cost."

What happened to people getting married because they love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together? It is my understanding that this exists outside of looking for economic security and desire for children. Things that make me go hmmm.

So my day started out, unfortunately, not good. I broke my Ipod headphones. Guess I'll have to buy some new ones. It ended up being alright as I went out to lunch after school with a friend and had a mango mojito! Then we headed over to the new Westfield Mall downtown. It is huge and connected to the older mall down there. As the article mentions though, the mall stands in amzing contrast with the homeless people who inhabit that and surrounding areas. I didn't buy anything, but I need to be on the lookout for shoes because I've got a ball to go to next weekend. Eek!

Virgin America Airlines christened their first airplane called Jefferson Airplane at SFO yesterday.

The airline, long in the works, is a licensing of Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic Airways. Its first route will be between San Francisco and New York, to start early next year (if all goes according to plan). No word yet if in-flight meals will consist of two pills--one that makes you larger, one that makes you small...

Hah! I hope all goes according to plan because I'd be hopping on that plane ASAP to visit my friends back in New York (yes, I do still have them). I'm hoping for the pill that makes you smaller first so I can stretch out in the airplane seats, saving the pill that makes you larger till landing. Hello my friends! I apologize for being out of touch, but I had to celebrate my birthday last weekend. Lucky me, I got to do it in Hawaii. This week has been rough with the making up time. Lost season three premiered this week and it was glorious. I'll be back on a regular schedule soon. Interesting stuff going on in the world with the Foley scandal, school shootings, spinach probes, and much much more. Also, go see The Science of Sleep. It might not be the same as Eternal Sunshine. Definitely more of a fantasy feeling, very blurred lines of reality and dream worlds. Overall, it's a good movie about love and I recommend it.

I have spent the last two weeks, since receiving the Season Two DVD, watching and re-watching episodes. I had finished it within two full days. After doing this, I moved on to reading about it online. I have visited Lostpedia, Wikipedia's main Lost page, The Dharma Initiative stations pages, and especially, this map. In addition I've read a lot of forum pages and checked out a bundle of The Lost Experience pages and clues. I even plan on tuning in to DJ Dan podcast tonight.

Yes, you can make fun of me all you want, but I need something to take my mind off of law school and this is certainly a mind-boggling pastime. Are any of my friends as intrigued as I am? DNA Evidence Frees Man After 15 Years

New York Times article detailing the conviction of a 17 year old and confining him to prison for 15 years to life. The interesting thing about this case is that DNA evidence had never pointed to Mr. Deskovic, he allegedly was coerced into confessing to the crimes, and he pleaded not guilty from the beginning. It's tragic that the man lost some very important and formative years behind bars, and 15 years, that's just about half of his life in prison. It's a good thing to be released, but an even more important issue for this not to happen. Hopefully with the more sophisticated DNA testing presently, this would be MUCH less likely to happen.

Lazy Sunday

Well, this was a pretty relaxing weekend for me.

I picked up Arrested Development Season Three. I enjoyed it a lot, but hate that I burned through it so fast that the whole thing is over. There were many hilarious moments, but you could sense the sinking ship feeling that the show wouldn't last. Great guest stars including: Scott Baio, Justine Bateman, and Charlize Theron. I wish another network picked it up, but if you believe the last episode, maybe there's hope for a movie. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it as a film though. I like the episodes, they're like bite-sized morsels of laughter.

I also had my first In-N-Out Burger. The burger itself was pretty great, the fries were not my favorite. The menu was literally: hamburger, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, fries, and shakes. That was until my buddy showed me this secret menu. Next time I'm getting it either "protein" or "animal" style.

Oh yes, and I watched, The Neverending Story, which made me feel like a kid again, even though I didn't see the movie when I was a child.

Hmm, with all that relaxation, I guess I should get to that law school reading, woo! Oh, and if you're reading this, Hello Grand dad!

If I Could Save Time in a Bottle

The Charleston Saturday Gazette has an article detailing the finding and contents of a time capsule. I remember wanting to make one of these when I was a kid. Heck, I am thinking about making one now inspired by this article. What most intrigued me was that there was:

A copy of “Charleston Public Schools Courses of Study” — the curriculum for every grade level. By second grade, students learned to distinguish oak, cherry, walnut, hickory, sweet gum and ash trees. By third grade, they learned the difference between “summer and winter foods” — a distinction that hardly exists today. In high school, all students were required to take at least one year of Greek or two of Latin or German.

The differences in the curriculum are amazing. I wish I could tell the difference between woods and foods. Sometimes I really feel like I was meant to have grown up in the past. I adore everything that is available for me to learn now and all the freedom I have, but something about the simplicity and practicality of the past makes me yearn for that.

Starting Salaries Soar for Lawyers

The NYT documents escalating salaries for first year associates at larger New York based firms. It's unclear whether that increase has trickled to other large market areas as well. Seemingly there's a firm by firm decision about starting salaries and whether they should be the same firm-wide, or have premiums based on cost of living. Law firms are interesting with the publicity of the salaries. I have visited the greedyassociates.com website, just out of curiosity a few months back, and I know that to make more money I'll have to stay in a metropolitan city. Good thing that's all I've ever really chosen for myself. Hawaii is not the hotbed for lawyers. I guess the market is smaller and there are fewer large firms out there so salary takes a nose dive. I feel that the longer I am away from New York, no matter how much I miss it, I will become less interested in practicing there. San Francisco is home to a lot of larger firms as well, including a branch of my New York firm. It's time for me to really sit down and analyze what I want out of my career and if the thrill of firm life and a larger paycheck is what I want out of my education. In other news, I think I'd look amazing in that pink skirt suit.

Happy Anniversary to Me!

So, yesterday was my one month anniversary of being in San Francisco and I have to say it was probably one of the most jam-packed and enjoyable days yet. As mentioned, I went to the Sausalito Art Festival. We left a little after 8am and didn't return til a little after 10pm. I'm going to link to a few of my favorite artists and the one I bought a few photos from a little bit later, but first will discuss the rest of the day. Unfortunately this won't be a picture post because bonehead me forgot my digital camera.

It started with an underground ride to the Embarcadero, and then a streetcar ride to the ferry pier, but since our group was early we strolled around Pier 39 and saw the sea lions. They were such characters and it was adorable to watch them play around on the docks with their sea lion buddies. Then we ferried over to Sausalito for the festival. As soon as we stepped off the ferry we were given programs and sent on our merry way. The weather in Sausalito was to die for; just the right mix of sun and a slight breeze. There was food and entertainment to go along with the huge collections of all different sorts of interesting artwork. We grabbed a lunch of fried calamari, pizza, crab cakes, and margaritas under a tent while watching some old school bands play. We stayed at the festival from about 11am til 5pm, there was just so much to see and everything was so visually stunning. I even got a chance to look in the U.S Army Corps of Engineers model of the Bay Area. Of course there were a few things that were more my style than others, but I would've taken home something from every booth if I had the money and space for it. After the festival we headed back to San Francisco on the ferry and walked to Caeser's for an Italian feast. Our party of five each had a seven course dinner which was not bad, but way too much food, especially after the lunch we had. Dinner was definitely in Italian style in that we were at the restaurant for two hours plus. From there we did a reverse Muni trip home only to collapse into bed because of the exhausting day.

On to the important part. So there must've been two to three hundred booths and I'm pretty sure I got a look at at least 90% if not all of the booths. Of all the different types of art, I was definitely most drawn to the photography. Paintings, sculptures, jewelry, printmaking, glassblowing, and all sort of mixed media works were available as well.

Patty Mulligan was one of the more innovative photographers. You've got to read her process section to really understand the intricate nature of the photos. One of the people I was with bought a few of her photos. They were truly magnificent to look at under a light source. The gold really captures something in the photographs.

Chris Honeysett was another photographer who caught my eye. He does a lot of archtectural work, with a real concentration on composition. My favorites from him are the foggy golden gate bridge, and some of his water drops black and whites.

Jeff Laing is moving towards more sculptures, but I was really caught by his "Fireworks" section. This is flame painting on copper. Check out Crack in the Void, which is stunning.

Melissa Herrington's website is apparently not up and running yet, but her paintings are worth checking out once it goes up. I'll try to keep on top of this one. I think if I ever took my own painting seriously I'd like to try this style of old and warm looking comforting forms and abstractions.

Robert Burridge's paintings are colorful and eclectic. I was really a huge fan of some of them, but some were over the top even for me. Vibrant colors are definitely the appeal of the paintings, but you've got to be in the mood and have the right space for one of these works.

Thomas Barbey had some very realistic surrealist photographs, not to mention his website is elegant and a complete visual and audio experience. Tearful Encounter is my favorite. This website is definitely one to spend hours looking at and the superimposition of images is really fascinating.

I bought my photographs from Eddie Soloway. The website isn't the fanciest, but his photographs are exquisite. They are subtle, cerebral, serene, and evocative. My purchases were Iris, Tornado Prelude, and one other piece that's not on the website. The iris is so classic and it'll go perfectly in my bedroom, while the tornado one is just so haunting I couldn't pass it up.

Fly Me to the Moon (or NYC or Hawaii)

So I had heard about this a while ago, but never had too much use for it. Now that I'm thinking about some possible trips back to New York or to Hawaii, I'm checking out Farecast. The site is really quite interesting compiling data to predict whether airfare will be going up or down in the future. It's amazing how much cheaper it is to fly to Hawaii from here than New York.

On another note, the MTV VMA's were on last night and although I didn't watch most of it, I did catch Lou Reed presenting with Pink! Um, why on earth was Lou Reed presenting? A.F.I. won the rock video of the year, which was awesome. Maybe now I should sell mt autographed fan on eBay.

So, I was one of the mentioned Metafilter followers who checked out the Plastique Monkey blog full of "disturbingly cute" drawings. Like Yuka says, you might want to watch out for the mildly NSFW drawings, but they are oddly endearing. I actually really like the animals made out of cucumbers and eggplant. This weekend I'll be attending the Sausalito Art Festival. Woohoo, maybe I'll get some pieces for my bare walls. I am planning a Cribs entry for the blog because I'm quite proud of the San Francisco house.

Today there was another school event where we got to meet the new dean of Hastings College of the Law. I am just amazed with the approachability of the faculty and staff of this school. While engaging in conversation with some classmates, we were approached by three of our professors, just to chat. I have been nothing but impressed with the opportunity to interact with well respected members of the law community. Anyone still looking to get into law school, I give Hastings two big thumbs up.

After that ugly Forbes.com controversy, how about some helpful suggestions for men trying to improve their emotional intimacy. This AskMetafilter thread like most others on the site has some great suggestions for men to learn how to communicate with women so you don't end up sounding like a bonehead like Michael Noer.

P.S. Today at school a girl noticed that I dyed my hair and gave me a great compliment. Hoorah!

I Won't Marry a Man who believes this Forbes.com Article

A male counterpart had sent me a Forbes.com article a few days ago arguing that men should marry women with careers. I am not providing a link to it because I think it's a load of crap and you smart people out there can find it if you really want to. Obviously I'm not the only woman who took issue with it as seen in this article. The article spurred quite the controversy and I'm sure the buzz is giving Forbes.com more popularity than it's experienced in a while. I'm not a raging bitch feminazi or a crazy leftist; I'm just offended that someone would imply that because I am educated, because I want to make something of myself so that I don't have to rely on a husband to take care of me, that I won't make a good wife should that be my desire. A wife as an equal in a relationship built on respect, honesty, and communication, who has values and morals and is not interested in extra-marital affairs.

Also, a quick mention, a woman I went to college and volunteered with, Jill at Feministe, has quite an informative counter-position to the original article with some nice dissection of the lovely statistics and findings that were cited. I'm with Jill, you "smart men" who find truth in this article should not bother with me.

One of the Many things I Miss About New York

Look at all these cool metro stations. Even New York, which is by no means the most exciting and artistic or those listed, has a much more aesthetically pleasing subway than San Francisco. New York's is also more extensive and faster than the MUNI. I'm getting used to it though, and the MUNI does come much closer to my home. I've only been on five of those listed, but from the looks of it, I want to visit: Lisbon, Munich, Prague, and Rhine-Ruhr. Who's with me?

So the common saying about San Francisco's crazy weather is, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco, and by golly it is true. I have worn long sleeves, long pants, and a hoodie and still felt the windy, wet, cold seep through them. Boo, but apparently Twain never said that anyway. Orientation is almost over and my law school career is about to begin and honestly, I feel quite confident with my decision and it pleasantly surprises me.
